| Darrlyn A. Cook-Smith
January 19, 1938 - January 14, 2002
Darrlyn Ann Cook-Smith was born January 19, 1938
in New Orleans, Louisiana's Seventh Ward. She was the first-born
child of Edward Carter Cook and Esther Lucy Smith. She was called
to rest on Monday, January 14, 2002 in Seattle, Washington at the
age of 63.
Darrlyn attended Marinez Nursery School, Corpus
Christi and Valena C. Jones elementary schools, Xavier Prep and
Xavier University where she received her BA in education.
Darrlyn married Joseph A. Smith in December 1961.
She worked in the New Orleans Public School system for 5 years.
When she and Joe relocated to Seattle, she authored and hosted a
children's television program, "The Show Me Show." She
was the owner, teacher and director of Smith's Studio of Dance and
Gymnastics. She also earned a Masters degree in dance. Darrlyn earned
her doctorate degree in education from Seattle University, specializing
in multiple intelligences. She retired from the Seattle school system
as a curriculum coordinator. At the time of her death, Darrlyn was
owner and artistic director of children's rhythm tap group, TTAAPP
Central in Seattle.
Darrlyn also authored several books on New Orleans'
7th Ward Culture
The New Orleans 7th Ward Nostalgia Dictionary
1938-1965;
The New Orleans 7th Ward Night Before Christmas;
The "C" Word - A The New Orleans 7th Ward -
Nostalgic Creole Poetry; and Tap Note Cards.
In addition to writing and illustrating the above,
she also developed a coloring book: Color Me Rhythm Tappin' with
Dr. Tap.
To know Darrlyn was to love her. She always left
you feeling uplifted. Her time was spent helper innter-city children
in Seattle. Before her body was transported to New Oreleans for
burial, there was a viewing in Seattle. Her family was surrounded
by her students, friends and family bidding her a fond farewell.
Many well-known "tappers" are planning a special tribute
to celebrate her life at a later date in Seattle.
Darrlyn leaves to cherish her memory
husband,
Joseph; sister, Gail M. Cook-Ferrouillet; daughter, Barbara Rabb;
grandchildren, Joseph and Janvier Rabb and numerous cousins and
relatives in Seattle, Los Angeles and New Orleans.
Darrlyn is now home!
